Moving On :: 5 Things You Must Do During Your Next Move

Did you know that May was National Moving Month? We are gearing up for the busiest season of the year with moves and our NEAT girl, Maria is taking over the blog to share her best tips for moving. As you can imagine, New York is NOT the easiest place to move in or out of so Maria has learned every trick in the book and is here to share them with you today!

New York, New York City, Moving, Moving Tips, Moving Help, Moving Month, Moving Companies, Movers, Relocation, Cross Country Move, Junkluggers, Donate, Consign, House for Sale, Buy a house, homeowners, organize, professional organizers, home organizing, home decor, packing, packing tips, packing help

Hi NEAT readers! With personal experience moving from Manhattan to Brooklyn and then BACK to Manhattan again (I missed it!), I am so happy to be able to share with you some of my expert advice when it comes to moves today. Hopefully my five favorite tips can make your upcoming move as stress-free as possible.

1. Hire the Right Movers :: Choosing the right moving company is the biggest decision you can make to ensure a seamless and stress-free move. We've moved clients all across the country and have noticed that the one thing all good moves have in common is a great moving company. Be sure to do your research before you decide on who to hire - read reviews, talk to someone at the company, and know what you are getting into. If you're looking for a great mover in New York, we never hesitate to recommend A1 First Class or Roadway Moving - they're both top-notch companies that will make sure every facet of your move is taken care of.

2. Pack Early :: This is a big one that we've seen ignored time and time again. You start with the best intentions, telling yourself you'll start packing weeks in advance and that everything will be perfectly packed and organized by room. And then life gets in the way and before you know it, it's the night before the movers are coming. You frantically throw anything you can into the nearest box and tell yourself you'll deal with it when you unpack. Except it's a million times harder on that end and you immediately regret not doing it the right way from the start. Avoid that regret by having a plan - set aside a little time each day in the two weeks leading up to the wedding to pack one or two boxes. That way, it's not overwhelming and you can avoid the last minute rush.

3. Use the Right Supplies :: One of the biggest changes we've seen in recent years is the rise in reusable moving supplies, and we are huge fans. Companies like BoxUp and Binit allow consumers to rent reusable moving boxes and the process couldn't be easier. They drop the boxes off at your current residence and pick them up at your new home a few days (or weeks) after your move. The boxes are sturdy and durable and allow movers to move your belongings more quickly than they could if they were in cardboard boxes. And, as an added bonus, there are no boxes to break down and get rid of at the end of your move, making your to-do list that much shorter.

4. Declutter on the Front End :: Moving is the perfect time to go through your belongings and decide if you'd like to donate, consign or toss anything. As you pull things out to pack them up, evaluate whether or not it's something you really want to bring to your new space. If it's not, set it aside in a pile for donating or consigning. If it's something you're not quite sure about, consider putting it in off-site storage for six months. If you don't need it or miss it in that time, you know what to do with it. In New York, we love companies like Box Butler, who will pick up your unwanted stuff, store it for you, and then deliver it back to you on-demand.

5. Clean up After Yourself :: Last but not least, make sure you leave your space as clean as possible. This is especially important in NYC, where you can be charged a hefty fee for leaving anything not nailed to the wall behind. If you have a lot of junk to dispose of and aren't quite sure how or where to get rid of it, call in experts like the guys at Junkluggers. They'll come over, give you an estimate based on how much you have to get rid of, and then cart it all off without you having to lift a finger. Best of all, they are eco-friendly and try to donate as much of their pickup as possible.

Hopefully your next move will be just a TINY bit simpler with these tips. Most importantly, remember that if you get overwhelmed, there is a NEAT girl close by!

What Happens In Vegas... Can Now be Organized

That's right! Our final launch is in Sin City! Not to say that having an unorganized home is a sin... BUT we are officially ready to take on organizing in Las Vegas (we are looking at you JLo, Britney and Celine!) It should come as no surprise to anyone that our latest NEAT girl has a personality that can fill a room and we cannot wait for you to meet her too. Check out our interview with our 18th and FINAL city (for now of course...)

NEAT Method, professional organizer, new business, las vegas, vegas, sin city, the strip, poker, home organizing, organizer, professional organizer, Melanie Walker, home style, home decor, home design, luxury, residential, desert,

NM:: Hi Melanie! We are so excited to introduce you to our readers. Tell us a bit about yourself!

MW:: My full name is Melanie Suzanne Walker. I'm originally from the Bay Area and moved to Las Vegas in 1996. Wow, 20 years went by fast! I followed my family here and my husband's family is here as well so needless to say we have tons of pool parties and are very close.

My first job in Las Vegas was teaching aerobics, step, spin and aqua classes. I was the early morning teacher, 5:30am! Let’s do this! So… I’d say I’m a morning person. I taught well into my 8th month of pregnancy (a little cray-cray). I also held a full time job as a director of training for Station Casinos. I eventually went to work for MGM Resorts. I climbed the corporate ladder quickly and soon was promoted to VP of Human Resources and Corporate VP of Training & Development. I was there in total for 9 years.  4 years ago I started my own executive coaching practice. I became a certified professional coach in 2012, CPC. I’m also an HR consultant for small to medium sized businesses.

A few years ago I was selected to do a Dyson (customer testimonial) commercial. I had always loved a good cleaning product, so this opportunity was exciting. I liked the experience so much that I started taking acting lessons. (Much harder than it looks!) I’ve done a walk-on role in a Station Casinos commercial, University of Phoenix (partnership) commercial and the Dyson commercial.

I’m constantly changing my hair (color and all). I love change.

My life is an exclamation point!

NEAT Method, professional organizer, new business, las vegas, vegas, sin city, the strip, poker, home organizing, organizer, professional organizer, Melanie Walker, home style, home decor, home design, luxury, residential, desert,

NM:: You crack us up! We love all of the jobs you have had and your abilitly to embrace every opportunity. Tell us a bit about your family, are they like you?

MW::I have one daughter Zoie (17), and two step-kids, Ashley (27) and Noah (16). My Husband, Trent and I just celebrate our 10-year anniversary. Trent and I love to take driving adventures to the beach in Cali, and hiking in Utah and Nevada. Although I am a NEAT girl, I don't mind getting a little dirt to explore the outdoors. My daughter is a pre-professional ballerina with Miami City Ballet School and trains there full-time. I love ballet and dance. A day doesn’t go by that I don’t watch a few professional ballet dancers on Instagram or You Tube. I’m obsessed.

NM:: So fun! Let's talk more about Vegas. When we think of Vegas, we think of the strip, tell us what we have been missing out on when you go past the slot machines.

MW:: Las Vegas has beautifully master planned communities with parks, walking and bike trails. My favorite place is Red Rock Canyon. I live only 10 minutes from some of the best hiking! It’s stunningly beautiful.

The Las Vegas strip is one of the brightest places on earth when viewed from outer space. I live in Summerlin a suburb of Las Vegas, and there are many unique shops and phenomenal dining. Downtown Summerlin is the newest outdoor mall and it's a fabulous place to shop, dine and hangout. I, (of course) love the Container Store and Town Square. You can often catch me at The Smith Center. It's the perfect place to catch a ballet, concert or Broadway show. I love a show of any kind! Vegas is perfect for this on and off the strip.

NM:: Can you share with our readers what your favorite organizing product that you can't live without (think outside the box...or bin)

MW:: I’m obsessed with pretty notepads and notebooks. I love making lists. Sugar Paper has some pretty great options that I'm really in to. I organize all my projects, errands and shopping lists so I can accomplish them geographically and efficiently. (As any NEAT gal would do!)

NM:: So what is your favorite tv show as it relates to the home? There are so many to choose from these days!

MW:: I’m currently fascinated with the Tiny House craze. It’s the master of minimal living and organization. I love the Property Brothers especially with them making Las Vegas their home. I’m a sucker for a good before and after.

NM:: There are so many celebrities that take up temporary residency in Vegas which means that they certainly need help getting settled. If you could pick, who makes your list of people you would want to help get settled in Las Vegas?

MW:: Celine Dion, Penn Gillette, Carrot Top (I run in to him all over town)…I’d love to organize all his props!

NEAT Method, professional organizer, new business, las vegas, vegas, sin city, the strip, poker, home organizing, organizer, professional organizer, Melanie Walker, home style, home decor, home design, luxury, residential, desert,

NM:: Carrot Top! We did not expect that answer... although knowing you... maybe we should have! :) Okay, final question and we will let you go - what is your favorite NEAT space that has been completed and why?

MW:: I love an organized pantry. I love helping clients save time and money because they can easily see what they have and what they need.

NEAT Method, professional organizer, new business, las vegas, vegas, sin city, the strip, poker, home organizing, organizer, professional organizer, Melanie Walker, home style, home decor, home design, luxury, residential, desert, pantry, alphabetized, pinterest,

It's No Longer a Secret Service... NEAT Launches in DC!

Happy Thursday! We couldn't wait a minute longer to share that NEAT is opening its doors in Washington DC. For those of you that have been NEAT fans for a while now, you know that we were in DC a couple years back. Ever since we closed, we have been interviewing and looking for a great fit. We are self proclaimed perfectionists so the search took time but we are so proud of our newest NEAT girl and couldn't be happier that DC is ready to live the NEAT life!

Read our interview below to find out more about our newest gem, Ashley.

Home organizers, Ashley Hatcher, professional organizers, home design, home style, Washington DC, Maryland, Virginia, USA, DC, white house,

NM:: Hi Ashley! First of all, great name (wink, wink)!

AH:: Thanks! I figured I would be going by Ashley H with this crowd :)

NM:: Ha ha, true! Tell us more about you - where are you from, how long have you lived in DC, etc etc?

AH:: My name is Ashley Hatcher and I am originally from Houston, Texas. I moved to DC in 2011 and met my husband, Chris after meeting him at a wedding in 2008. We have been married for two years next week, time flies!

Home organizers, Ashley Hatcher, professional organizers, home design, home style, Washington DC, Maryland, Virginia, USA, DC, white house, Chris Hatcher, bride, wedding, east coast

NM:: Congrats! So you've been in DC for a while now. Tell us why you are the perfect fit for the NEAT DC role.

AH:: Aside from already living the NEAT life, I love the joy that creating a NEATer lifestyle brings to clients. I'm all about efficiency and maximizing time, and there's nothing like being organized to help get you there (and the smile on a client's face that tells you that you've succeeded). Of course I have the status quo NEAT girl tendencies - never leaving home without my Day Designer, not going to bed with a dirty kitchen, keeping a mental glass and plate inventory count of my kitchen, and color coding closets just because - those also help too! :)

The DC Metro Area is a gorgeous area to live in and I am honored to be able to spread some NEAT joy around in our nation's capital and make spaces as beautiful inside as they are outside.
Home organizers, Ashley Hatcher, professional organizers, home design, home style, Washington DC, Maryland, Virginia, USA, DC, white house, fashion, style,

NM:: DC is lucky to have you! Now let's talk more about organizing. What is your all time favorite product?

AH:: I LOVE the Iron Toy Barrel from The Container Store. This product is perfect for storing stuffed animals and toys, and I even added a liner to the bottom and placed it in my hubby's office to store old building plans he no longer needs. Its a sexy design, great price, and adds a bit of "modern-ness" to any room!

Home organizers, Ashley Hatcher, professional organizers, home design, home style, Washington DC, Maryland, Virginia, USA, DC, white house, container store, toy storage, toy basket, kids toys

NM:: How about sharing what your favorite blogs to follow are?

AH:: So tough! Honestly, there are two - Apartment Therapy & Who What Wear. I count on Apartment Therapy to give me those "oh so smart" hacks for creatively transforming your space and Who What Wear is my go to expert for all things fashion.

Did I say two?? I actually meant three! I don't get out of the bed until I've read theSkimm every morning... It's an e-newsletter, so I figured it might count too.

Home organizers, Ashley Hatcher, professional organizers, home design, home style, Washington DC, Maryland, Virginia, USA, DC, white house, friends, best friends, club

NM:: Ha ha! Three is great! So tell us about who you find to be the most influential woman?

AH:: Beyonce. She's a hard worker, crazy talented, and I'm constantly taking #girlboss notes from her. She's never afraid to push boundries, has managed to stay humble through all of her stardom, and it doesn't hurt that she's also from Houston!

My runner up? I know you're not surprised that I have two but my second would be Diane Von Furstenburg. She built a fashion brand from her drive, determination, and intellect, and her philanthropic spirit is beautiful. She wears many hats, including CFDA president, and wears them all gracefully and fabulously.
Home organizers, Ashley Hatcher, professional organizers, home design, home style, Washington DC, Maryland, Virginia, USA, DC, white house,
NM:: We love those women - great choices! Okay, last question... What is your favorite NEAT space that has been completed and why?

AH:: I love the simplicity of this space and how luxurious it feels. I am a true lover of fashion and love the idea that a person should feel like she's shopping in her favorite store when she looks in her (or his!) closet. Research says that on average, a person wears less than 20% of the clothing in their closet. With a closet this organized, I have no doubt that this client is getting 100% usage of these items.
Home organizers, Ashley Hatcher, professional organizers, home design, home style, Washington DC, Maryland, Virginia, USA, DC, white house, luxury closet, luxury, closet installation, custom closet, closet design, designer clothes, designer bags

We couldn't agree more, Ashley. A NEAT space definitely adds to a person's life. We can't wait for you to transform the lives of many in DC!

A NEAT Girl Moves and Launches our 16th Market!

Most people remember when they turned, "Sweet 16" and this will certainly be true for NEAT. Today, we are happy to share that our next market to launch is.....

Naples, Marco Island, Professional organizer, home organization, Joyce Beers, Sunshine State, home organizing, home style, home decor, interior design, home design, home style, new home, movers, unpacking, organizing, walk in closet, dream closet,

That's right! Naples, Florida. This location is particularly special to us because the NEAT girl that is running this market, happens to have already been a part of the NEAT family... Read our interview to find out the latest...

NM:: Alright, the time has finally come to share with our readers all about you! Can you give us the basics first?

JB:: My name is Joyce Beers, I am originally from Bucks County, Pennsylvania which is 25 miles north of Philadelphia. I spent the last 20 years in the midwest (Indiana and Ohio) and I just moved to Naples, Florida last week. My husband and I are avid golfers so we are in heaven down here! We have a dog named Asti and a cat named Chip who are just as happy to have moved south as we are! We like to travel to visit our families in Charlotte and back home to Philly, but I have a feeling now that we are in Florida they will be coming to visit us. Since we are restaurant owners, we naturally love to entertain our friends with great food, good wine, and lively conversation every chance we get.

Naples, Marco Island, Professional organizer, home organization, Joyce Beers, Sunshine State, home organizing, home style, home decor, interior design, home design, home style, new home, movers, unpacking, organizing, walk in closet, dream closet,

NM:: Thanks, Joyce! Everyone has been waiting to hear your story with NEAT. You did not recently hear about us like most of our new cities. Tell us about your journey with NEAT.

JB:: I started working for NEAT in Columbus, Ohio with my friend, Julia a year and a half ago. She was launching her new business there and when she told me about how NEAT helps people by transforming their homes (and sometimes lives) into well ordered spaces, I knew I would fit right in. In that time, I have grown my organizational skills, and turned my love for clutter free, efficient, and stylish spaces into a passion I want to share with anyone and everyone that I can. I enjoyed every minute of my time working in Columbus and will miss all the fun I had with Julia and the Columbus NEAT team. So once we decided to move, I just had to bring NEAT with me to Naples!

NM:: We will be honest, when Julia mentioned to us that you were moving and interested, we may have let out a small squeal of delight ;)

Naples, Marco Island, Professional organizer, home organization, Joyce Beers, Sunshine State, home organizing, home style, home decor, interior design, home design, home style, new home, movers, unpacking, organizing, walk in closet, dream closet,

NM:: Okay, so many of our readers that have been following the NEAT life for a while now know that we are already in two markets in Florida. Why do you think Naples needs NEAT and what can they expect from you?

JB:: Much like myself, there are many people in the Naples and Marco Island area who are transitional. Either they are moving to the area full time from large homes up north, and trying to downsize. Or, are in their Florida home only part of the year. It can be challenging to feel “settled” and no one wants to spend their precious Florida time inside rearranging their cabinets and closets. That is where I come in! I can provide an efficient system for their whole house or just a pantry / closet facelift so that all of their belongings inside the cabinets and on the shelves look as beautiful as the rest of the home.

Naples, Marco Island, Professional organizer, home organization, Joyce Beers, Sunshine State, home organizing, home style, home decor, interior design, home design, home style, new home, movers, unpacking, organizing, walk in closet, dream closet,

NM:: It's no secret that we love organizational products. Can you tell us a favorite of yours that we should all be adding to our wishlist?

JB:: My current “crush” at my favorite online shop, theorganizingstore.com is the Amelia Magazine Baskets (set of 4) by IMAX.  But it was hard to pick just one thing!!

NM:: Ooooooh! Good choice - it looks like the perfect product for your Florida clients!

Naples, Marco Island, Professional organizer, home organization, Joyce Beers, Sunshine State, home organizing, home style, home decor, interior design, home design, home style, new home, movers, unpacking, organizing, walk in closet, dream closet,

NM:: Where do you find inspiration for organizing homes?

JB:: My favorite magazine to shop for inspiration is Dwell. Like NEAT, they have such a fresh approach to homes and feature great spaces.

Naples, Marco Island, Professional organizer, home organization, Joyce Beers, Sunshine State, home organizing, home style, home decor, interior design, home design, home style, new home, movers, unpacking, organizing, walk in closet, dream closet,

NM:: Speaking of great spaces, what is your favorite space that NEAT has completed?

JB:: It was hard to pick just one (once again) BUT this closet is EVERYTHING. Who could resist those hats?!

Naples, Marco Island, Professional organizer, home organization, Joyce Beers, Sunshine State, home organizing, home style, home decor, interior design, home design, home style, new home, movers, unpacking, organizing, walk in closet, dream closet,

NM:: We agree, that space is amazing. Lucky for you, you will have the pleasure of owning many hats since you are officially a resident of the sunshine state. We are so happy you will be running your very own market for NEAT and look forward to all of your success in Naples!

According to a NEAT Girl :: 9 Wedding Registry Items that MUST be on Your List

Lucky for us, our NEAT girl, Brooke is getting MARRIED this Summer and we cannot wait! Besides the fact that she will be a drop dead GORGEOUS bride, we have been loving the inside scoop on how to plan a wedding like a NEAT girl. There are so many things we need to tell you about when in comes to wedding planning but we figured we would share one of the most important parts:: the registry. It is a fine, fine line between registering for beautiful, timeless pieces, and getting a little "trigger happy" with the registry gun at the store. Brooke and her fiance, Andrew have officially mastered the art of registering.

A Look Into a New NEAT Baby's Room with a SPECIAL Announcement

Hi Everyone! It's Molly, NEAT's co-founder :) I am taking over the blog today to share with you the scoop on our new son, how we organized his room and an amazing partnership that I can't wait a minute more to share....

Molly Graves, Ryan Graves, Hudson Graves, Curren Graves, San Francisco, Uber, NEAT Method, Uber exec, behind the scenes, nursery, baby room, nursery ideas, nursery style, Oeuf crib, urban outfitters, baby clothes, tea clothing

I had the pleasure of meeting Jessica Alba and her team at Honest and we will be working together to show you how their products can help you live the NEAT life. The timing was perfect because I was nearly due to have a baby and their diapers alone are about the cutest things I have ever seen! Speaking of cute (I may be biased...), let me introduce you to the newest love of my life... Curren Hart Graves.

Molly Graves, Ryan Graves, Hudson Graves, Curren Graves, San Francisco, Uber, NEAT Method, Uber exec, behind the scenes, nursery, baby room, nursery ideas, nursery style, Oeuf crib, blah blah baby, swaddle, swaddle tips

My husband Ryan is an avid surfer so Curren came from an iconic pro, Tom Curren. It also didn't hurt that it's origins were Gaelic - Ryan's family has an Irish background. The name Hart is my Grandmother's maiden name and my Mom's middle name. As you can imagine, it was a simple decision to create a room with an ocean theme so I stuck with black and white as well as every shade of blue I could find.

Molly Graves, Ryan Graves, Hudson Graves, Curren Graves, San Francisco, Uber, NEAT Method, Uber exec, behind the scenes, nursery, baby room, nursery ideas, nursery style, blue rug, ocean, ocean theme

My favorite spot in the room is this corner. Truthfully, the entire space really stemmed from this rocking chair. This felt like something that could be in his room or a playroom forever instead of a glider that I would want to get rid of ASAP. I also have been dying (pun totally not intended but SO GOOD) to find a place to use these curtains from a favorite Etsy Shop of mine. I figured blue dip dyed fabric would go nicely in the ocean room. With my first son, Hudson, a day hasn't gone by that I haven't used my tried and true "it's not a diaper bag, diaper bag." With two, I realized I need to use something that is exceptionally functional. The Honest Diaper Bag is even, "Dad approved" according to Ryan. I love that the front zipper is a mini cooler for milk! It also has pockets but not so many that you forget where everything is which is key when you are looking for a snack for an upset toddler.

Molly Graves, Ryan Graves, Hudson Graves, Curren Graves, San Francisco, Uber, NEAT Method, Uber exec, behind the scenes, nursery, baby room, nursery ideas, nursery style, rocking chair, modern nursery, modern style, modern home

This circular shelf is a bit of a nod to the nautical theme and I also had it made from a shop I found on Etsy

Molly Graves, Ryan Graves, Hudson Graves, Curren Graves, San Francisco, Uber, NEAT Method, Uber exec, behind the scenes, nursery, baby room, nursery ideas, nursery style, ocean wallpaper, wallpaper, whale, beach, ocean,

Curren's changing station is really quite simple. I used the same dresser that I used in Hudson's room because it fits my favorite drawer organizers inside perfectly! I also put a HUGE fun bean bag in the room in hopes that Hudson will be interested in playing in here for a bit while I change his brother... wishful thinking...I know...

Molly Graves, Ryan Graves, Hudson Graves, Curren Graves, San Francisco, Uber, NEAT Method, Uber exec, behind the scenes, nursery, baby room, nursery ideas, nursery style, CB2, changing station, changing table,

The art, once again is ocean themed but I just HAD to get this fun geometric mobile. Let's be honest - I totally got this for myself! Hopefully Curren likes it too!

Here's a close up of those drawer organizers in action. I love how perfectly they hold diapers and pajamas. The sectioned one holds all of my favorite baby products. Thanks to Honest, I have tried them all now and am loving their rash cream and bottom wash currently.

This little pocket organizer was 100% inspired by one that I saw at Land of Nod but it just so happens my Mom is amazing with a sewing machine so she made me one that was exactly what I wanted :)

Finally, did you think this NEAT girl was going to show you an entire room without showing you the closet?! I had California Closets come in a get this space set up how I wanted it and then, from there, I did a little organizing magic.

When prepping for a baby, it is so important to make the organization as SIMPLE as possible because in the heat of the moment (i.e mid diaper change) you don't have time to think. I used these linen baskets to make my life easier. I have one for extra wipes, extra diapers, next size up diapers, keepsakes, and clothes that are too small.

Of course, no closet is complete without the non-slip hangers. It also doesn't hurt that they are SO STINKING CUTE when they are this mini!

Back to diaper changing, and feeding for me! Hope you liked the tour of Curren's nursery. If you need me, I'll be answering emails at my 12 and 4 am feeds ;)
