Where to Discard Items You Can't Donate

Friday, April 5, 2024

Garages, attics, and basements are commonly a collection zone for items we no longer use or need. From old furniture to boxes filled with forgotten belongings, these spaces can quickly build clutter over time. But what do you do when you're ready to clear space and it's either too much to haul yourself or donation centers won't accept it? Susie Renninger of NEAT Method Baltimore North connected with a few local experts in her area to weigh in...

When to Call a Junk Removal Service

Sue Hilger from MoveJunk, a family-owned junk removal company in the greater Baltimore area, suggests contacting a junk removal service when you have big bulky items, old furniture and appliances, or large amounts of clutter. "This is especially useful for items that are difficult to move, weigh too much, or require special handling. Our team can manage it efficiently," Hilger explains. Many people find relief in the time and effort saved, especially during moves, renovations or when space needs cleared quickly.

Ordering a Dumpster

For major renovations, construction projects, or significant clean outs, Hilger recommends ordering a dumpster. It provides an easy solution for on-site waste disposal and simplifies the cleanup process. "Planning ahead is crucial to ensure availability and proper scheduling for your project," she adds. So basically, you'll want to make sure you order a dumpster in advance.

What Can't Be Taken?

Junk removal companies have limitations, including hazardous materials and certain appliances. Hilger encourages seeking professional removal for items requiring specialized handling, such as asbestos or large appliances, to make sure they are disposed of safely. Some areas offer hazardous waste disposal of items like paint and motor oil so check with your city to see if that is an option.

Recycling Options

Many items, including wood, metal, plastic, computer equipment, and mattresses, can also be recycled. We were surprised when David Traub from DecoSolutions, a mattress removal and recycling service operating in the Baltimore and DC region shared that, "Over 20 million mattresses are discarded in US landfills each year." DecoSolutions offers an earth-friendly alternative by deconstructing mattresses and reclaiming materials like metal, foam, and fabrics, turning environmental liabilities into valuable resources.

Traub shared, "Our mission extends beyond simple recycling. We aim to assist a diverse range of partners in disposing of these bulky items sustainably."

Finalizing Your Cleared Space

Once your unwanted items are removed, creating a system for what you're keeping is crucial. Weather-tight bins, shelving, and wall systems are the perfect solution to maintain an organized attic, garage or basement. Need some extra help finalizing your project?
