Getting the right organization products starts with taking the right measurements. It’s a simple process, and will save you from the frustration of bins that don't fit, containers that hang off the edge, or drawers that won't close. Avoid the return process by measuring right the first time.
Here's how we do it...

The Measuring Basics
Measure every drawer and shelf where you need organizing products. Record the width x depth x height and make note of any adjustable shelves that allow for wiggle room. Write them down or keep a running list on your phone for easy reference. Lastly, consider taking pictures to remember what you're storing in each space.
Account for Obstructions
Shelves and drawers aren't always as straightforward as they look. Hinges, screw heads, and other hardware can eat into your usable space. Measure inside those obstructions to get an accurate number.
The same goes for under-sink areas. Pipes and plumbing take up more room than you'd think. Measure around them so you know exactly what you're working with. For a fool-proof approach, draw a diagram of what you’re working with.
Think About What's Going Inside
Before you choose a product, consider what it needs to hold. If you're containing a large or awkward sized item, measure that too. A storage bin might fit the shelf perfectly but be too shallow for what you're storing.
Choosing the Right Size
Select bins and baskets that sit fully on the shelf. Nothing hanging off the edge. If a bin is slightly too long, try turning it sideways. Sometimes a simple rotation solves the problem. In drawers, select a configuration of organizers that forms a complete rectangle for a clean look. Make sure your selection accommodates the individual item categories, while also fitting together within the overall dimensions of the drawer.

Make Use of Extra Drawer Space
All drawer dimensions are different. Some drawer organizers will fit perfectly and others may leave space on the side or in the back. If you experience some extra space, don't ignore it. That gap is perfect for maximizing space by using it to store long skinny items like kitchen tongs or a ruler. Let the space work for you.
Quick Reference
- Measure width x depth x height for every space
- Account for hinges, hardware, and plumbing
- Measure the items being contained, not just the space
- Choose bins that sit fully on the shelf
- Rotate bins if needed for a better fit
- Use leftover drawer space for long or awkward items
Our final tip? Measure twice. Double check that you’ve recorded all measurements accurately before adding anything to your cart. And if you’re more of a visual learner, watch our measuring tutorial.
