Space Lift: A Supply Closet Case Study

We love showing finalized NEAT spaces on our Instagram feed, but what we love even more is telling the stories of how our clients are living more efficiently in their newly organized spaces.
Take a look at this supply closet and see what makes it so NEAT! It just might give you a little inspiration for your own supply closet organization ideas.
Room: Supply Room
Time to complete: 5 Hours
Objective: We wanted to make sure this closet had a defined purpose. Originally, toys and laundry detergent hid among the cleaning supplies, but we made sure to relocate them so our clients wouldn’t have any surprises when going to grab a magic eraser!
Client’s favorite feature: Our client requested labeled bins across the width of every shelf to help prevent family members from tucking cleaning products in places they don’t belong. This also makes it easy to see exactly what they have and prevent overbuying.
Stand out product: The Grook utility holder we used is designed to hold different types of cleaning tools upright and off the floor. With the ability to hang between loops, within loops, or off a hook, we were able to accommodate all of our client’s brooms, mops, and dusters and still leave room for more!

Feeling the inspiration? If so, you’re our kind of people. Now, let’s talk about how you can approach your cleaning supplies organization project.

How to Organize Your Cleaning Supplies: A Step-by-Step Guide
What’s the best way to organize cleaning supplies? There’s no single answer. The best method is whatever is most intuitive and works for you and your space. That being said, these five steps will give you a strong framework to start from.
1. Find the Proper Place
How should cleaning materials be stored? Start with the obvious: laundry items in the laundry room, bathroom cleaners under the bathroom sink, dish soap in the kitchen. Then, dedicate some room in a linen closet or garage for any backstock (especially if you shop in bulk).
2. Choose the Right Containers
Cleaning products can get messy. To be ready for any spills, it’s important to choose a container that can be easily wiped down and washed if need be. We like to use plastic, acrylic, and wire options for this reason.
A cleaning caddy can be a great option for your go-to supplies. Think of it as your cleaning command center on the go. You can tuck it away in any closet or cabinet, then grab and go when it's time to tackle those bathroom mirrors or kitchen counters.
3. Keep it Green
It can be tough to pick the right cleaning products for you and your family. There are so many eco-friendly options out there, including one of our favorites: Nellie’s. Do your research, try a few, and find your favorite! Many products even come in sustainable containers or offer refills that avoid packaging waste.
4. Opt for Multi-Purpose Over Single Use
Some cleaning products are specific to the surface, like stainless steel or wood. When possible, multi-surface sprays or items that serve multiple purposes save money and space. You don’t have to buy a ton of products—or find space for them all in your home. Win-win!
5. Reduce & Reuse
We love choosing options that save the planet and save money, which is why we’re fans of reusing durable microfiber cloths instead of paper towels. We touched on this in #3, too, but you can reduce waste by setting up a refill station for your most-used cleaning products, making use of reusable containers instead of single-use plastics.

Quick Tips for Any Space
- Don’t bother making space for products you no longer use. Give them away or dispose of them safely—just make sure to follow local waste guidelines.
- Always store cleaning supplies out of reach of children and pets. Add latches to lower cabinets if necessary.
- Sort cleaners into categories that match your cleaning routine. Some common systems include sorting by room (kitchen, bathroom) or task (dusting, floors).
- How do you categorize cleaning supplies? We recommend putting general, multipurpose products together and grouping others by where they’re used (bathroom, kitchen, etc.).
- Label everything—even if you think you'll remember what goes where. This alleviates confusion with the rest of the family.
