How to Completely Organize Your Closet Without Totally Losing It

Sunday, September 15, 2024

Ever glanced in your closet and felt completely overwhelmed by the clutter? We’ve all been there! We also know that tackling a big closet project can be daunting - so we’re giving you permission to take it slow. Start small and celebrate the little victories by completing just one category at a time. We’re walking you through the steps and sharing how to turn the chaos into a beautifully organized space in just five days.

Keep in mind that to really get your closet organized, you’ll have to take everything out. Yes, everything! It might look worse before it gets better, but trust us, this is how the magic happens. The good news is, you’ll only need to pull out one category each day.

Day 1: Hanging Clothes
Start your week by tackling everything hanging on your closet rod.

  1. Take it all out and group similar items together.
  2. Be ruthless: if it doesn't fit or you haven't worn it since flip phones were cool, it's time to say goodbye.
  3. Stuck on decisions? FaceTime a friend for a reality check.
  4. Hang everything back, keeping categories together. Want to level up? Color-code within each group.
  5. For skirts and pants, add hanger clips. They'll keep everything at the same height and looking neat.

Pro tip: Our slim Everyday Hangers are a game-changer for saving space.

Day 2: Folded Clothes
Today, we're conquering drawers and shelves. Get ready to become a folding expert!

  1. Empty those drawers and sort everything by type.
  2. Adopt the art of file folding to offer a quick, overall visual.
  3. Fold items to the height of your drawer and arrange them in upright rows.
  4. Color-code if you're feeling fancy.
  5. Add drawer dividers to keep everything in line.

Pro tip: Try using a folding board for consistency

Day 3: Shoes
Shoes, shoes, everywhere! Let's get them under control.

  1. Bring out all your shoes and group them by type.
  2. Got five pairs of black flats? Time to pick your favorites and let the others go.
  3. Short on shelf space? Get creative! Add modular shelves or have custom ones cut.
  4. Arrange your shoes by category and color. It's like a rainbow, but for your feet!
  5. Store out-of-season shoes in bins under your bed or in another room.

Pro tip: Use individual bins to corral sandals and slippers, if space is tight.

Day 4: Handbags
Your bags deserve to be seen, not hidden away in dusty corners.

  1. Collect all your bags together, big and small.
  2. Consider consigning or donating any items you don’t use.
  3. If you've got the space, dedicate a shelf or two to display larger bags.
  4. Keep them standing tall with purse stuffers or tissue-filled duster bags.
  5. Use a clutch divider for smaller bags.

Pro tip: Shelving limited? Arrange your collection within a soft-sided bin.

Day 5: Accessories
We're in the home stretch! The key with accessories? Contain and label.

  1. Gather all jewelry, scarves, belts, ties and hats together.
  2. Sort everything by type and say goodbye to anything you no longer wear.
  3. Use lined trays for jewelry and arrange them in a drawer or use a jewelry box.
  4. File fold and color-code scarves within a labeled bin.
  5. Roll belts and ties, sort by color, and display in divided trays.

Pro tip: Display large or structured hats on wall hooks to maximize space
